Trucks do not have access to dumping waste

“The road to this place is now blocked”, says one of the employees of the company in charge of collecting domestic waste in the capital Bujumbura. He says domestic waste which is put near the dumping ground causes stagnant water. “Then, trucks become stuck”, he said.

Eight trucks full of domestic waste have been parked near Buterere dumping ground as they didn’t have access to the place this Monday 18 March. Earlier on 16 March, twelve others left the area without being unloaded. He urges the government to rehabilitate the road leading to Buterere dumping ground. “A truck full of waste can easily spend two or three days without being unloaded”, added the employee of that company.

People living around the dumping ground also complain about unloaded waste nearby their households. “The waste has been scattered around the dumping ground at about 50 m from our houses”, says an inhabitant from the locality. The government should rehabilitate the road towards the dumping ground. “Otherwise, we are very likely to get many infectious diseases that are transferred by means of dirty hands”, he said.

Iwacu has tried to contact the local administration and Bujumbura Mayor for more details, but to no avail.
