ASSUR holds general meeting to promote insurance sector in Burundi

The association of insurers in Burundi- ASSUR has organized a two-day general meeting of insurance in Burundi which started this November 15 in Ngozi Province. The aim of the meeting is to boost the insurance industry in Burundi.

Trinitas Girukwishaka, ASSUR representative, says the insurance sector in Burundi has opportunities and challenges that need to be discussed among partners. “It is for this reason that ASSUR has organized this general meeting to allow various partners from the public and private sector to boost this sector for the economic growth of the country,” she said.

Mrs. Girukwishaka says the objective of the meeting is to teach public authorities, policy makers and the entire population about the interest of insurance for the economic growth of country.
She also says it is an opportunity to share with all partners the challenges that the insurance industry faces and the ways and means to address them.

The President of ASSUR also says the meeting will allow partners in the public and private sector to jointly define the strategies and concrete actions to be taken to double income in the next five years.
During this general meeting, different themes will be developed namely legal and regulatory institutional reforms, the development of life and vehicle insurance.

The vehicle insurance represents 45% of income of the non-life insurance sector in Burundi and is the fundamental part of the insurance industry in the country.

Joseph Butore, Second Vice-president of Burundi, says insurers in Burundi play a significant role in the economy of the country. “The government of Burundi acknowledges the important role played by insurance companies in the national economy,” he says.

Mr. Butore encourages the initiative to sensitize the population to savings. “The introduction of mass insurance and microinsurance is beneficial to a great part of the population including low-income families”.

ASSUR has brought together life and non-life insurance companies such as SOCABU, UCAR, SOGEAR, BICOR, SOCAR, JUBILEE, EGIC and BIC under theme:”Insurers committed to sustainable development of the country.
