Two policemen shot dead in Mutimbuzi commune

Two policemen were killed and their guns robbed yesterday around 2 a.m. in Maramvya area, Mutimbuzi commune in Bujumbura province. Police say adding that investigations into the attack are underway.

N.M, a young woman met in Maramvya area, says she heard the shooting while going out in the night. “I was coming back from outside when I heard gunshots. I checked the clock and it was 2:13. In the morning, we were awoken by the police who were conducting search operations,” she says.

H.L, a man living around the scene of the attack, says a suspected man was seen in the locality during day time. “A man who wore shorts and with a gun came and asked about a kid who was not at home at the time. When the population saw him and alerted the police. The latter decided to carry out night patrol,” he says, adding that the same armed man would be the one who killed the two policemen during night.

According to witnesses on the spot, five people have already been arrested for investigation. The spokesperson for the police also confirms the information saying the two police agents killed were Jean Simbagoye and Léonard Nshimirimana
