Ombudsman concerned over correspondences between Uganda and Burundi presidents

After a meeting with different presidents of commissions and councils of human rights operating in Burundi this 13 December 2018, Burundi Ombudsman has said he is concerned about the recent exchange of letters between the presidents of Uganda and Burundi.

Edouard Nduwimana: “It is not up to the Ugandan president to indicate who the government should engage in negotiations with”.

Edouard Nduwimana: “It is not up to the Ugandan president to indicate who the government should engage in negotiations with”.

Edouard Nduwimana, Burundi Ombudsman, says the president of Uganda wants to show to his Burundian counterpart who he should engage in negotiations with. “Burundi government knows who it has problems with. It is not up to the Ugandan president to indicate who the government should engage in negotiations with”.

He says that his institution is concerned about the channel of communication used by the two presidents. “We would have liked other forms of communication different from public correspondences sent between the two Heads of State. I bet they can find one,” he says.

The Burundian Ombudsman recommends the government to negotiate with whoever wants to develop the country but discourages it from engaging in dialogue with coup plotters and other criminals that are wanted. “They must be brought before the court instead of being part of those who should negotiate with the government”.

That reaction of the Burundian Ombudsman comes after the president of Uganda has responded to President of Burundi’s recent letter this December 12, 2018. The president of Burundi had asked EAC to address the Rwanda-Burundi issue .He pointed out Rwanda’s role in destabilizing Burundi security and criticized the recent report by the facilitation office led by William Benjamin Mkapa. He has also denied to engage in dialogue with the people he refers to as ‘criminals and coup plotters.
