OIF: Burundi hasn’t received letter from Rwanda, says government Spokesperson

In the public conference organized by the spokespersons for the government institutions this 22 June, Philippe Nzobonariba, Spokesperson for Burundi government says his government has not yet received a letter from Rwanda President. The latter would have asked his Burundi counterpart to support the candidacy for his Minister of Foreign Affairs, Louise Mushikiwabo for the post of Secretary General of the International Organization which gathers French Speaking Countries “OIF”.

He says Burundi is ready to make reconciliation with Rwanda if the latter apologizes for the wrongs it did. “The doors are open and nothing would prevent Burundi from supporting the Rwandan candidacy for “OIF”,” he says adding that if Rwanda wrote an apologetic letter to Burundi it is because it remembers the good relations that once existed between the two countries.

Rwanda government says it sent the letter a long time ago. In his tweet, Olivier Nduhungirehe, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community, says: “The letter was sent on June 5, 2018 and received by Burundi Government”. He also said Rwanda wrote to Burundi government and many other countries.

Louise Mushikiwabo will compete to replace Michaelle Jean, a Canadian, elected as Secretary General of OIF organization in 2014. The election will be held during an OIF meeting that will take place in Erevan-Armenia from 11 to 12 October, this year.
