Ezechiel Nibigira, Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs, says the three UN investigators have been declared persona non grata with immediate effect.

The decision to ban those UN experts from setting foot on the Burundian territory comes after the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi released a report about human rights situation in Burundi on September 05, 2018.

The report directly implicates the President of the Republic in calls for hatred and violence. It says the human rights continue to be violated by different authorities and members of the ruling party CNDD-FDD.

The government of Burundi judges this report as fallacious and defamatory. “Burundi ignores the aims and unsaid realities behind this report which is contrary to the reality of the country”, reads the letter signed by the Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In October 2016, Burundi also declared persona non grata other three United Nations rights experts who had accused the government of being responsible for abuses committed in the country and had warned of a danger of genocide from the vicious cycle of violence.
