Burundi suspends presidential election for Burundians living abroad amid COVID-19 outbreak

In a correspondence he submitted to the Burundian diplomatic and consular representatives abroad this April 15, Ezéchiel Nibigira, Minister of Foreign Affairs has said the National Independent Electoral Commission–CENI is unable to organize the elections including presidential, legislative and district councilors scheduled for May 20, abroad.

“The current health situation characterized by the measures imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in different countries doesn’t allow the free movement to the embassies,” says the Minister, adding that the National electoral commission therefore regrets not being able to organize these elections due to this pandemic.

The National Independent Electoral Commission had said 5,126,351 voters including 12,933 Burundians living abroad would participate in the 2020 elections.
