Burundi: Man shot dead in north of Bujumbura

It was around 8:00 p.m. this 7 June when residents of Ngagara neighborhood in Ntahangwa urban commune of the capital Bujumbura heard shootings in the area.

Vincent Barisharije, a taxi driver ran into an ambush laid by two bandits along “Buconyori” boulevard. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers threatened him before shooting him. The victim was immediately taken to a health district where he died shortly after.

Pierre Nkurikiye, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security, says the two bandits wanted to steal his car in vain. “Local residents immediately intervened, the reason why they failed to steal it although they had already shot him,” he says. Nkurikiye adds that his car is now parked at Ngagara zone office. “Investigations are ongoing to identify the suspected criminals given that they escaped with their own car,” he says.

According to a local human rights organization, 57 people were killed in May 2018.
