Two dead bodies of a man and a woman were found this Tuesday, 6 September in the Rusizi River, in Rusiga locality of Rugombo municipality in Cibitoke, the western province of Burundi.

The information was provided by farmers who were working along the Rusizi River.
Local residents were not able to identify both bodies. They were in advanced decomposition and local authorities and security forces decided to bury them immediately.

According to Rugombo residents, these people were killed elsewhere and thrown in the Rusizi River. “Over the past few days, people have been reported abducted and disappeared in different areas of the country and some days later, the bodies were found in rivers,” they say. Those people refer to lifeless bodies recovered in the Mubarazi and Ruvyironza rivers last month.

So far, human rights defenders have been asking for scientific expertise to identify these bodies thrown into rivers but in vain.
