Twelve injured in grenade explosion in northern Bujumbura city

Local sources reported a grenade explosion in a bar known as “Choice Ziko Bar-belonging to a certain Patrick” located on 11th avenue in Twinyoni locality of Kamenge neighborhood in the north of Bujumbura, the commercial capital of Burundi, in the night of May 10. “It was around 7 p.m. when we heard a grenade explosion that injured a dozen of people,” says an eyewitness of the crime.

He says the grenade was thrown by unknown people. “Police officers and agents of the humanitarian association-Doctors Without Borders, quickly rushed to the scene to give first aid to the injured few minutes after the explosion,” he says. He also says they ignore the motives of the attack as some people would be killed and others injured. In the morning of May 11, neighbors of the crime scene were performing their daily activities.

Pierre Nkurikiye, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Public Security told Radio Isanganiro journalists that the attack was perpetrated by unknown people. “The grenade was thrown around 7:15 p.m. and injured twelve people”, he says adding that one person has been arrested for investigation. He also says the investigation is ongoing to identify the perpetrators.
