Security Ministry committed to improving security, says minister

While presenting the 3rd term achievements of 2018, the Minister of Public Security says there has been an improvement in the fight against criminality in Burundi but says there is still a long way to go.

Alain Guillaume Bunyoni, Minister of Public Security says the security situation is generally good throughout the country but reports cases of crimes. “72 cases of murder, 59 cases of assassination attempt, 298 cases of rape, 960 cases of robbery… are among others cases of crimes that the ministry of security has recorded during the last three months.”

He also says over 3685 searches were carried out in the whole country. Some criminals were apprehended and weapons and ammunitions were seized. “2031 criminals were arrested and some weapons like Kalashnikov guns, grenades, pistols, bombs…were seized,” he says adding that 50 gangs were dismantled.
Mr. Bunyoni also says the police have carried out improvised road checks to improve road security. “An amount of BIF 479,014,000 was fined to road code offenders particularly for excessive speed or lack of documents,” he says.

The ministry of public security also says the national commission against the proliferation of small arms and light weapons has continued to identify the latter. A number of weapons was given to or seized by specialized police units.
