The police announced yesterday the dismantling of a group of criminals. According to police spokesman, Pierre Nkurikiye, this group of five individuals is known for a wide range of crimes. He also says the five individuals had just been released by Gitega Prosecutor’s Office on 10 May.

Nkurikiye says the same individuals attempted to attack a bus that was carrying employees of Mweya Espoir University in Gitega. According to him, they also threw grenades at a gas station in Gitega and fired on the trailer trucks at Mutwenzi in Gitega. “The same group tried in 2012 to assassinate the head of the National Intelligence Service in Gitega,” says Nkurikiye. He also says the five individuals were imprisoned but did not know when they were released.

The police spokesman accused Térence Manirambona, member of the political coalition Amizeroy’Abarundi of supporting these criminals. We hold information that these criminals are working under the orders of MP Manirambona”, Nkurikiye says.

Manirambona said on 16 May that these people were being unjustly accused.  He said it in reaction to the arrest by the police of two people affiliated to the Amizero y’Abarundi political coalition.

“The police have credible information that MP Manirambona trains and is responsible for the activities of this armed group,” says Nkurikiye.

MP Manirambona refutes the police accusations. According to him, he pleaded for them as he could do for any other individual since he has been elected to represent the people. “The police charges are baseless. I pleaded for a group of people and they accuse me of supporting a group of criminals. I don’t plead for the members of Amizero y’Abarundi only,I am the voice of the people”, says Manirambona.
