One person asked about who and how the contributions to 2020 elections and the upcoming referendum are managed.

Desire Musharitse, The spokesperson for the ministry of finance says there is a commission composed of the ministry of finance, ministry of interior and Burundi National Bank staff members that is in charge of the contribution management. “The commission has already collected a sum of 2 billion and 200 million Burundian Francs. It is on the account opened for the sake of good management.” He also says all the money that has already been collected is from public institutions and different ministries.

The National Independent Electoral Commission-CENI says it has not yet fixed the amount of money needed for the elections but says people will be informed soon. “The question is being studied and the answer will be given soon,” says CENI spokesperson, Pierre Ntahorwamiye.

The contribution is the result of an appeal launched by the President in August 2017, calling Burundians to finance the 2020 elections themselves to safeguard national sovereignty.
