Iwacu news reporters’ lawyers expect release after public hearing

Agnès Ndirubusa, Christine Kamikazi, Egide Harerimana, Térence Mpozenzi and their driver Adolphe Masabarakiza have appeared before Bubanza High Court, this December 30. After a public hearing which lasted 1h40 min, the Public Prosecutor has just asked for a fifteen-year prison sentence to the four Iwacu news reporters. He has also requested that the car, camera and recorder of Iwacu newspaper become the « state property ».

Clément Retirakiza, one of the lawyers of Iwacu reporters has said they got enough time to refute the accusations. « We expect that they will be released very soon », he said. The judges will deliberate behind closed doors within at least 30 days.

The four Iwacu reporters were arrested in Musigati commune, Cibitoke province when they went to cover the heavy guns heard since the early morning of October 22. They are accused by the Bubanza Prosecutor of complicity in undermining the state internal security.
