Elections 2020: CENI announces new rules

The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced on 18 May measures to be followed during the polls scheduled for 20 May.

“Burundian citizens who were not able to overthrow their voting cards will participate in the upcoming elections scheduled for 2020 May if they present their identity cards and are on the voter lists”, announced Pierre-Claver Kazihise, CENI chairman at a press briefing held on 18 May.

He also announced that everyone will vote in the polling station they got registered except CENI agents, observers of political parties, local observers, police officers, body guards of Burundi dignitaries as well as journalists.

Pierre-Claver Kazihise mentioned that local and international observers are not allowed to use either mobile phones or cameras inside the polling stations during the polls.

“CENI has the right to withdraw accreditation to any organization that violates the electoral code,” he added.
CENI chairman also announced that political rallies around the polling stations are strictly prohibited. He says that anyone who violates the regulations will be punished with an imprisonment varying between 3 months to two years and a payment of a fine varying between BIF 400,000 and 800,000.

Note that the presidential, communal council and legislative elections will be monitored by 53 observers from nine diplomatic organizations based in Burundi namely China, Russia, the African Union, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria as well as Tanzania.
