Constitutional Court declares Evariste Ndayishimiye as President-elect

The Burundian Constitutional Court has this Thursday June 6th 2020 declared that the candidate of the ruling party CNDD-FDD Evariste Ndayishimiye is the winner of the recently-held presidential election with 68, 70% of the votes.

Agathon Rwasa, his main challenger and CNL party candidate has got 24, 18%. Charles Ndagijimana, Chairman of the Constitutional Court has said the triple ballot was regular and added that the irregularities reported shouldn’t motivate its cancellation. “The complaints filed by Agathon Rwasa were declared null and void.

With a participation rate of 87, 70 %, the ruling party CNDD-FDD also won the legislative election with 68% while CNL party got 22, 42%.

CNDD-FDD will have 86 seats in the National Assembly. CNL party will get 32 seats whereas UPRONA party will have two.

While filing the complaints to the Constitutional Court on May 27, Agathon Rwasa, CNL party leader, said he would appeal to the East African Community Court if the Constitutional Court rendered the decision in the ruling party’s favor.
