CNL party leader not to appeal against Constitutional Court ruling

Agathon Rwasa, candidate of the opposition party CNL in the recent presidential election has taken note of the decision rendered by the Constitutional Court, this June 4, declaring Evariste Ndayishimiye, candidate of the ruling CNDD-FDD party as the winner of the recent presidential election.

Agathon Rwasa: “We didn’t appreciate the decision but we take note of it”

“We didn’t appreciate the decision but we have taken note of it,” says Rwasa adding that he had submitted enough evidence to challenge the provisional results of the general elections held on May 20.

Agathon Rwasa also says he will continue to abide by the local law. “We won’t make any appeal to the East African Community as previously announced. It isn’t a court of appeal,” he has said.

On June 4, the Constitutional Court declared that Evariste Ndayishimiye, presidential candidate of the ruling CNDD-FDD party got 68.70% of the votes while Rwasa got 24.18%.

On May 27, Agathon Rwasa, Ndayishimiye’s main challenger had filed a complaint to the Constitutional Court challenging the provisional results, saying the previously-held elections were marred by enormous irregularities.
