Goreth Mukiramana, legal representative of Seruka center says the latter records about 120 cases of SGBV per month. “Over 60% of these cases are teenagers and 20% of them are children under 5 years of age”.

She says the center receives both men and women who are victims of SGBV and adds that the number of women is very high. “Gender variation is 5% for men against 95% for women”. She also says cases of SGBV recorded this year have decreased compared to the previous year. “Over 1199 cases of VSG were recorded in 2017”. She however wonders whether SGBV has really decreased or is not reported.

Ms. Mukiramana says the socio-cultural factor is one of the factors which hamper the eradication of SGBV. “Sometimes victims do not report that they have been abused and this proves a great handicap as SGBV is still considered as taboo”.

The legal representative of Seruka center calls on the community to take its responsibility and participate in the fight against SGBV. “The community must take the lead in raising awareness on SGBV and helping its victims,” she says.

Seruka center is a local NGO involved in fighting against gender based violence. As it celebrates its 15th anniversary, the center has organized an open week dedicated to an awareness campaign on sexual and gender based violence. It started this Monday, September 3rd.
