Out of 11 contenders who participated in Miss Burundi 2016 contest on 14 August, Ange Bernice Ingabire, 21, won the competition after three years it was suspended. While others put forth projects to promote women and youth, Ange focused on a project to support kids born with deformities. The new Miss Burundi says she expects to run a campaign that aims at sensitizing pregnant women to step up their prenatal consultations.

“I expect to tour two provinces per month and plan to work hand in hand with other organizations involved in that domain. In nine months, I am sure that I will have toured all 18 provinces. The other three remaining months will be devoted to the assessment of different achievements made in the previous period”, she says.

Then, Ange notes that the campaign attendees will in turn sensitize others. “During the activity, about one hundred kids with deformities will be treated after identification”, she hopes.

A student at the University of Burundi, in the first year in the Faculty of Medicine, Ange Bernice Ingabire also received a number of gifts after she had won the contest. We can mention a fellowship to study leadership at the University of Leadership, cell phones, bracelets, subscription at the fitness factory etc.

Native of Ngagara neighborhood in Bujumbura capital city, she completed her secondary school studies at the “Lycée du Saint Esprit”. She never thought of becoming Miss Burundi one day.

“I am naturally shy and I was trying to overcome this challenge by competing with others”, she stated.

Miss Burundi contest started in 2009 and was won by Alida Kaneza, Kheila Marie Ndayikeza in 2010, Ariella Kwizera in 2011 and Mélodie Mbonayo in 2012 before the event got suspended.
