AC Genocide Cirimoso pleads for UN Experts involvement in remains exhumation

Following the excavation of Ruvubu site in Karusi province, AC-Genocide Cirimoso association is concerned over the process of digging up the remains of the dead in the area.

Térence Mushano: “We need to avoid involving the future generation in such atrocities.”

Térence Mushano, Deputy Chairman of AC-Genocide Cirimoso says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission would look for archaeologist experts to achieve its mission. “CVR relies on local witnesses but forgets that even witnesses to cases of land conflicts lie”, he says adding that only experts confirmed by the UN Security Council would confirm the period those victims were killed.

“We need to avoid involving the future generation in such atrocities”, he says. Mr. Mushano adds that it is true that people were killed but there is a need to identify the perpetrators. “Tutsi and Hutu ethnic groups live together. The truth from one of the two must be one”, he says adding that the situation is similar when it’s about the lie. In addition, he says, testimonies from the victims and suspected perpetrators shouldn’t be similar.

On 14 February, during the presentation of the remains of people killed in 1972 thrown in Bukirasazi locality, in Shombo commune of Karusi province, Pierre Claver Ndayicariye has said CVR has already exhumed 6032 victims from six mass graves out of 18 already reported.
According to him, all victims were killed in 1972 and the majority were from « Hutu » ethnic group.
