The leader of Burundi Senate has said the new constitution allows Burundians with only a Burundian nationality to be at the top of the country. “The top five leaders have to be true Burundians from Burundian ancestors. No candidates with two nationalities are eligible,” he says.

“Imagine the people have trusted you and made you the deputy president or even the Senate leader. You go to another country for a job mission and few days later, your colleagues learn that you stayed in your second country. This happened and it was a lesson,” said Senate leader.

Ndikuriyo says that article of the new constitution will prevent disorder in the country’s structure and administration.

With the new constitution, there is only one deputy president. The top five leaders who will be required to only have Burundian nationality are the President of the Republic, the Deputy President, the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Senate, and the Chairman of the National Assembly.
