Three people killed in an attack in southern Burundi

The incident happened on 10 October night around 8 pm, in Bugarama municipality of Rumonge province in the south of Burundi.

Sources on the ground say that a group of gunmen threw grenades and fired point blank at people who were drinking in a bar belonging to the Head of Ruteme zone.

Two people including Romuald Bigirimana, both a member of the municipal council and director of the Ruteme Fundamental School and Havyarimana Gregory, a teacher at Saga Fundamental School died on the spot. Edouard Sindatunga , also a teacher at Saga Fundamental School, died from his injuries on the way to Rumonge hospital.

Contacted on the telephone this Tuesday,11 October, Oscar Ndikumwenayo, the secretary of Bugarama Municipality, adds that two other people namely Firmin Nigarura and Richard Niyogusengwa were injured and are now hospitalized in Rumonge. “If there was not rapid police intervention, the human damage of this attack would have been enormous,” he says.

None of the gunmen was apprehended. This local administrative nevertheless points out that the town was quiet and that the criminals did not steal anything.
