RWANDA – US supports military action against FDLR

United Nations Peacekeepers (MONUSCO) and the Congolese armed forces have threatened the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) with military action, as they did not disarm by the January 2nd deadline.

The United States supports the use of military force against the group according to U.S. Special Envoy to the Great Lakes Region, Russell Feingold. He stated that the group has demonstrated that a voluntary surrender process will not work, and that therefore, “military action must be undertaken to pressure the FDLR to lay down its arms.” However, FDLR leader, Major General Victor Rumuri reported to a News of Rwanda correspondent, that his troops are ready for any action against them, and they will continue their struggle.
