Ministry of the Interior rejects Agathon Rwasa request to create new party

The Ministry of the Interior has made public an answer to MP Rwasa’s request to create a new political party this November 8, 2018. It is rejected.

Pascal Barandagiye, Minister of the Interior, says he could not agree to the request of MP Agathon Rwasa for the approval of his new party because it has many similarities with another existing political party.

Pascal Barandagiye: “No political party may have a name, acronym or other signs identical or related to those of another party”.

Pascal Barandagiye: “No political party may have a name, acronym or other signs identical or related to those of another party”.

“After a thorough analysis of the file, we have noticed that the acronyms, emblems and motto of the political party seeking to be approved are similar to those of a political party already approved,” says Minister Barandagiye.

He says “Article 27 of the law No. 1/16 of September 10, 2011 revising law No. 1/006 of June 26, 2003 on the organization and functioning of political parties states that no political party may have a name, acronyms or other signs identical or related to those of another party”.

AgathonRwasa, First Deputy Speaker and leader of Amizeroy’Abarundi opposition coalition, has submitted his file asking for the agreement of a new political party on September 14 so as to comply with rules.
On September 24, Jacques Bigirimana, FNL party chairman, held a press conference during which he said he was going to address a correspondence to the Minister of the Interior asking him not to approve the new party because Rwasa has violated the law and stolen another existing party.

Agathon Rwasa, the main political opponent, denied the accusations made by FNL chairman and said the two parties are not the same although they have some similarities.
