DRC: Former fighters die in military camp

More than 100 demobilised fighters and their relatives have allegedly died of starvation and disease in a camp in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).A team from Human Rights Watch visited the camp recently and found the families in dire circumstances.
In September 2013, 941 fighters from various armed groups surrendered and were sent to the Kotakoli camp, along with several hundred family members, to await integration into military or civilian life. Supplies ran out after three months. Getting more provisions proved difficult because the area in the North-West is surrounded by dense forest and is almost inaccessible by road. The government is aware of the situation.
