COVID-19: OLUCOME concerned over contempt for preventive measures

Gabriel Rufyiri, OLUCOME Chairman says his organization is concerned over the lack of respect for the preventive measures against the COVID-19 pandemic in Burundi. Rufyiri wonders whether or not the pandemic is no longer a concern for Burundi. “Some Burundians don’t respect the preventive measures when the pandemic doesn’t yet have any vaccine or medicine,” reads a communiqué issued on June 1.

Some passengers wash their hands if they want

In different places in Bujumbura city, the preventive measures namely washing hands and social distancing are no longer respected. In car parking, passengers are not obliged to wash their hands. “We wash our hands if we want,” comments a passenger met in parking used by passengers who go to the northern part of Bujumbura city.

Gabriel Rufyiri regrets that the number of people infected by the pandemic continues to increase while the patients don’t benefit any assistance. He calls on the Burundian government to be vigilant. “No county should take this pandemic lightly and especially the developing countries. It causes enormous social and economic consequences,” says Gabriel Rufyiri.

On 31 May, the Ministry of Public Health reported 21 new cases of COVID-19 raising the total number of infected people to 63 including one death and 33 patients who have recovered.
