CENI slams door to observers reporting dissimilar irregularities

Pierre Claver Kazihise, Chairman of the National Independent Electoral Commission-CENI says the commission was surprised to hear that there is an organization which reported dissimilar conclusions in the recent elections.

Pierre Claver Kazihise: « 39 groups of observers were allowed to monitor the electoral process and their reports were similar expect for one organization. This is a paradox”

“39 groups of observers were allowed to monitor the electoral process and their reports were similar expect for one organization. This is a paradox,” says Kazihise at a press conference held this May 28.

He says that the majority of them give overall satisfaction about the electoral process, adding that that the electoral body agreed with the observers to report what they witness. “We expected them to be privileged witnesses,” he says.

CENI Chairman urges the organization to carefully assess how their observers proceeded. “There is a legal procedure to observe the electoral process. If an organization deployed incompetent observers, the latter would produce a wrong report,” he says.

On May 27, Burundi Catholic Bishops raised their concerns over the irregularities reported on the Election Day.They said the elections were marred by enormous irregularities and wondered if the latter couldn’t prejudice the results of the elections.
