Salvator Kiyuku, the president of Bujumbura Bar Association said that the assessment of the bar’s activities is encouraging despite difficulties. It was during the formal resumption of the bar’s activities after a one-month holiday. He congratulated the bar for managing“to provide free legal assistance to all those who come for help”.

Despite the positive results, their activities are impeded by multiple obstacles. He said that they face security hindrances like any other Burundian today, the lack of financial means that prevents lawyers from offering the most possible help, the lack of the independence of judges, and finally, structural hindrances. As for the latter, there are measures that don’t allow the population to have access to impartial justice. He gave the example of an order by the Supreme Court president requiring seekers of justice to pay huge fees, whereas it is crystal clear that the law provides for free legal aid to social justice for example.

The event, held at the “La Détente” this Wednesday, was organised by the Bujumbura Bar Association not only to assess what the association accomplished before the holidays but also to give instructions guiding their future activities.
