Apologies for the lack of French! I am a journalist based in Nairobi but currently in Kigoma.
I’m writing a story about refugees’ experiences – the Tanzanian and Burundian government are trying to entice Burundians back to their country, telling them that it is safe. This, of course, is hard to believe, with the upcoming referendum in May set to extend Nkurunziza’s powers.
I’m also looking at the evolution of Tanzania’s refugee policies towards Burundian refugees. At one time it was progressive, with over 170,000 refugees who moved here in 2015 given citizenship. However, last year, prima facie refugee status was revoked and Tanzania has subsequently removed itself as one of the UN’s CRRF pilots.
