Ndayishimiye says President Nkurunziza gave original ideas to the party namely the removal of fees for pregnant mothers while giving birth and the free treatment of children under five, the removal of school fees in public primary schools, the implementation of Fundamental School…. “Some Burundians had found these projects unworkable at first but he successfully implemented them,” he says.

The Secretary General of the ruling part says all these innovative ideas that advanced the country to the development have motivated the ruling party to thank and elevate President Nkurunziza to an ideologist of the party. “This means that CNDD-FDD will refer to his ideas to develop our country every year. He is like the father of our party,” he says.

Evariste Ndayishimiye says this hasn’t anything to do with the upcoming elections. “CNDD-FDD supports democracy. We will get together to see which candidate we should put forward. Today is not the right moment for this issue,” he says.

He, however, says President Nkurunziza’s ideas will continue to guide the ruling party even in 2020. “The programs that we will be presenting will be based on his ideas. But that does not mean that we will present him as a presidential candidate in 2020,” he says.

Pierre Nkurunziza has been president of Burundi since 2005. In April 2015, Burundi plunged into a serious crisis after he announced he would run for a third controversial term in office. Since then, the violence caused several hundred of deaths; thousands of Burundians fled the country while others disappeared, according to UN reports.

Following the meeting held from 9 to 10 March in Ngozi province, the central committee of the ruling party- CNDD-FDD has raised Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza to a visionary leader of the party.
