{"id":8167,"date":"2018-03-13T07:45:43","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T07:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=8167"},"modified":"2018-03-13T14:08:49","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T14:08:49","slug":"burundi-parcem-to-lodge-an-appeal-for-its-three-representatives-sentenced-by-muramvya-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/burundi-parcem-to-lodge-an-appeal-for-its-three-representatives-sentenced-by-muramvya-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundi: PARCEM to lodge an appeal for its three representatives sentenced by Muramvya Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three representatives of local NGO involved in changing people\u2019s mindset (PARCEM) accused of high treason were sentenced of 10 years\u2019 imprisonment and BIF 200.000 each in fine by Muramvya High Court on 8 March.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8173\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8173\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-8173\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Membres-parcem-300x142.jpg\" alt=\"Three local PARCEM representatives in public hearing \" width=\"484\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Membres-parcem-300x142.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Membres-parcem-600x285.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Membres-parcem.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-8173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three local PARCEM representatives in public hearing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Faustin Ndikumana, PARCEM Chairman says his organization is shocked to hear the sentence pronounced against the three local representatives in Muramvya Province. \u201cThis is an exaggerated sentence,\u201d says Ndikumana.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence concerns Emmanuel Nshimirimana, Marius Nizigiyimana and Aim\u00e9-Constant Gatore.<br \/>\nNdikumana says the accusation of \u201chigh treason\u201d is a serious accusation for people who were just preparing an ordinary meeting adding that the administrative officials were informed about the activity.<\/p>\n<p>Faustin Ndikumana says the meeting would focus on detention conditions of prisoners in Muramvya province. \u201cThey were arrested while they were identifying people should attend the meeting\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n<p>For him, accusing them of high treason before the meeting took place was unfair; they should be accused if ever there were among participants those who would disrupt security.<\/p>\n<p>Ndikumana also says the public hearing which began on 5 January was characterized by many irregularities. \u201cThe director of the public prosecutions did not convince the public.<\/p>\n<p>PARCEM Chairman says due to the judgment postponement for several times, the last hearing was fixed on 12 March. \u201cWe surprisingly learned that the judgment was pronounced on 8 March while we were preparing to go to Muramvya Province to get informed about the judgement\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Faustin Ndikumana says his organization has decided to lodge an appeal. \u201cWe still trust our judicial system.
