Those who were given mats sold them in order to get money for food”, according to Jean Marie Niyonzima living on the site.
He goes on saying that the rains of two weeks ago made things worse. “It destroyed our tents and some of those who shelter inside were obliged to sleep in mud”, he says sadly.

The lack of clean water is a major problem. There are only two taps for over three hundred families. Another problem that we have, says Rénovat Ndindurwaha, another resident is the toilets that are often full.
Isaï Ntakirutimana who also lives in Carama site indicates that they have a big problem concerning their toilets. “Our toilets are small. When it rains, they become full and overflow.”
“We now have five patients that are suffering from cholera who are at the hospital. But since the problems remain, more cases will be recorded soon”, Ndindurwaha points out.
Legend: Life inside the tents at the Carama site

People at the Carama site, one of the quarters in the North of Bujumbura, state that their living conditions are deplorable.
