{"id":15072,"date":"2020-02-05T11:51:56","date_gmt":"2020-02-05T11:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=15072"},"modified":"2020-02-05T11:51:56","modified_gmt":"2020-02-05T11:51:56","slug":"government-ready-to-prevent-desert-locusts-from-invading-burundi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/government-ready-to-prevent-desert-locusts-from-invading-burundi\/","title":{"rendered":"Government ready to prevent desert locusts from invading Burundi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Following the invasion of desert locusts in the region since the past few days, the Burundian Ministry in charge of Agriculture reported that different measures have been taken to prevent these locusts from invading the country. <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15073\" style=\"width: 537px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15073\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-15073\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CRIQUET.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CRIQUET.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CRIQUET-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CRIQUET-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/CRIQUET-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 527px) 100vw, 527px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Desert locusts invading the region<\/p><\/div>\n<p>D\u00e9o Guide Rurema, Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock has said that the Ministry has already identified a few control methods including mechanical control by collecting the desert locusts and chemical control by using phytosanitary products.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said the chemical control is not preferred in Burundi as it requires large-scale spraying which can cause human intoxication and the pollution of the environment.<br \/>\nMr. Rurema adds that insects killed are prey to birds and even humans. \u201cAs these insects contain pesticide residues, they can cause death to people or animals that consume them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Agriculture Minister calls on partners operating in the agricultural sector to get actively involved in the implementation of the contingency plan against these pests.<br \/>\nHe has added that Burundians must remain vigilant even though those locusts haven\u2019t yet arrived in Burundi. \u201cAll technical services and local residents are urged to report any invasion to the nearest services,\u201d he said adding that people should refrain from eating them.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Rurema has also indicated that a multi-sector commission to coordinate interventions, a technical supervision committee, a contingency plan for the fight against nomadic and desert locusts have been already established. \u201cWe will also share views and experience with neighboring countries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of 2019, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia were attacked by these locusts called Schistocerca gregaria. Until January 26, 10 Kenyan counties were attacked by these locusts in a month&#8217;s time and they continued to spread in several parts of this country despite aerial spraying intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Burundi has also experienced locust invasions in the past years.
