{"id":14144,"date":"2019-10-16T06:23:34","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T06:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=14144"},"modified":"2019-10-17T15:46:38","modified_gmt":"2019-10-17T15:46:38","slug":"burundi-government-committed-to-revitalizing-coffee-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/burundi-government-committed-to-revitalizing-coffee-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundi government committed to revitalizing coffee sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>D\u00e9o Guide Rurema, Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Livestock has said experts from the government and the World Bank have conducted an audit and discovered that stakeholders in the coffee sector didn\u2019t work in transparency.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14143\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14143\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-14143\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Deo-guide-Rurema.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"565\" height=\"325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Deo-guide-Rurema.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Deo-guide-Rurema-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Deo-guide-Rurema-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Deo-guide-Rurema-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-14143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D\u00e9o Guide Rurema: \u00ab We want to revitalize the coffee sector\u00bb<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere were serious problems related to the good management and repatriation of foreign currencies to the Burundi Central Bank\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Agriculture Minister has also said the government had no right to follow closely the coffee sector. \u201cThe government was only consulted when problems occurred,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Rurema also added that coffee farmers have not been paid on time. \u201cWe thought all coffee farmers would be paid by last August, but we have noticed that we achieved the payment of coffee farmers at 98%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said five institutions that have been late in the payment process of coffee farmers have only one month to pay all arrears. \u201cIf they exceed that period, serious measures will be imposed upon them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>For Minister D\u00e9o Guide Rurema, the government is determined to ensure good governance in the coffee sector. \u201cWe want to manage well the sector and work in transparency for sustainable development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Burundi government was forced to leave the coffee sector in 1991. \u201cFrom now on, the government will work together with all stakeholders and partners to revitalize the coffee sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The government has previously collected 47,653 tons of coffee cherry out of 75 thousand tons expected to be collected and 8,573 tons of fully- washed coffee. About 5,296 tons of green coffee and another 2,100 tons were already sold at $ 6,468,392.
