{"id":13642,"date":"2019-09-03T07:08:21","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T07:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=13642"},"modified":"2019-09-03T07:08:21","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T07:08:21","slug":"ntahangwa-river-to-be-given-another-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/ntahangwa-river-to-be-given-another-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"Ntahangwa River to be given another direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since August 22nd, the Burundian Ministry Of Environment in collaboration with that of Public Works and Territory Development has been conducting activities to give a new direction to the Ntahangwa River.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are conducting these activities to solve the problems the river causes in the nearby localities,\u201d says Marc Rugerinyange, Director of activities at the Engineering and Kazoza Company (EIS-EKA) which is performing the Ntahangwa River rehabilitation activities.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13637\" style=\"width: 540px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13637\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NTAHANGWA.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"530\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NTAHANGWA.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NTAHANGWA-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NTAHANGWA-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/NTAHANGWA-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Activities are ongoing to give Ntahangwa River another direction<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMukarakara Street which was damaged by this river will be rehabilitated,\u201d he says adding that the activities aim to stabilize the river\u2019s banks.<br \/>\nFor him, such activities will have a positive impact as they are intended to protect threatened houses built around Ntahangwa River.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter giving the river another direction, we will plant trees on the riversides,\u201d he says adding that people will move into their houses built along Ntahangwa River after the rehabilitation activities.<br \/>\n\u201cWe hope those activities will protect houses which were going to collapse soon,\u201d says a resident of Kigobe neighborhood in the north of Bujumbura city. These activities should end before the start of the rainy season, he says.<\/p>\n<p>Many houses and infrastructures have been threatened by the Ntahangwa River on the southern side of Kigobe neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>On the other side, Nyakabiga Basic School in the center of Bujumbura city was also affected by the landslide of the river banks but activities were conducted to stabilize them and protect houses in the nearby localities.
