{"id":13617,"date":"2019-08-30T08:22:19","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T08:22:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=13617"},"modified":"2019-08-30T13:41:22","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T13:41:22","slug":"who-recommends-more-scientific-research-on-artemisia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/who-recommends-more-scientific-research-on-artemisia\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO recommends more scientific research on Artemisia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a workshop organized by the municipality of Bujumbura in collaboration with ACECI, the World Health Organization-WHO has said Artemisia has not yet been approved as a medicine for malaria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13590\" style=\"width: 507px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13590\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dismas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"497\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dismas.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dismas-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dismas-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dismas-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 497px) 100vw, 497px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dismas Mbaza: \u201cA scientific research must be done to prove the efficiency of Artemisia\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dismas Mbaza, Program Officer at World Health Organization in Burundi has said researchers should send their results to the WHO expert team after conducting research on a given drug.<br \/>\n\u201cThis has not yet been done for the case of Artemisia,\u201d he also says adding that the process of drug registration by WHO takes time,\u201d he says<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Mbaza says there are some malaria drugs which have been manufactured from Artemisia \u201cbut technical processes were used to extract medicines from the plant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For him, a scientific research must be done to prove the efficiency of Artemisia.<br \/>\nHe says there should be an official regulation on the use of Artemisia in Burundi.<br \/>\nThis Program Officer at WHO also says there should be a joint technical group of people from different sectors to carry out more researches on Artemisia effectiveness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtemisia is a plant which prevents and treats malaria,\u201d says Ginette Karirekinyana, Chairperson of the International Cooperation Ethics Advisory Agency-ACECI.<br \/>\nShe says people who regularly take Artemisia cannot suffer from malaria. \u201cIt is effective at 98%,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>She calls on Burundians to grow Artemisia everywhere in the country.<br \/>\n\u201cIn former times, Burundians could treat malaria and other diseases using traditional drugs,\u201d says Alain Diom\u00e8de Nzeyimana, Deputy Spokesman for Burundi President.<\/p>\n<p>He says those who invest in traditional medicine should be supported.<br \/>\nArtemisia is a plant that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2000 years to fight against various tropical diseases including malaria.<\/p>\n<p>On February 26th, The French Academy of Medicine warned against the dangers of using dried leaves of Artemisia for the treatment and prevention of malaria.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a workshop organized by the municipality of Bujumbura in collaboration with ACECI, the World Health Organization-WHO has said Artemisia has not yet been approved as a medicine for malaria.
