{"id":13446,"date":"2019-08-14T07:25:49","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T07:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=13446"},"modified":"2019-08-14T07:25:49","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T07:25:49","slug":"catnip-another-means-of-preventing-malaria-in-burundi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/catnip-another-means-of-preventing-malaria-in-burundi\/","title":{"rendered":"Catnip, another means of preventing malaria in Burundi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a press conference held on August 13th, the Ministry of Health has said catnip can help to fight against malaria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13441\" style=\"width: 527px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13441\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Conference-Sante\u0301.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"517\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Conference-Sante\u0301.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Conference-Sante\u0301-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Conference-Sante\u0301-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Conference-Sante\u0301-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13441\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thadd\u00e9e Ndikumana (in the middle) calls on Burundians to grow catnip<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thadd\u00e9e Ndikumana, Burundian Minister of Health says mosquito nets were made to protect people from mosquitoes in the night.<br \/>\n\u201cHowever, due to climate change, we have realized that mosquitoes can bite people even during daytime,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ndikumana says the Health Ministry has conducted a scientific research in collaboration with the University of Burundi and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on catnip. \u201cResults have shown that the plant\u2019s oil helps to repel mosquitoes,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The Health Minister calls on Burundians to grow catnip and other medical plants from which malaria medicines are extracted. \u201cNatural medicines are not dangerous to health,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Tatien Masharabu, Director of Research and Innovation at the University of Burundi says researches have been conducted by the same university so as to promote medical products made in Burundi.<br \/>\nThe Researches done by the University of Burundi aim at preventing malaria, he says, adding that there are many plants in Burundi which are important to people\u2019s health once they are manufactured.<br \/>\n\u201cCatnip has oil from which soap and lotion can be made,\u201d he says, confirming that products made from catnip oil repel mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers report that nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip that gives the plant its characteristic odor, is more effective at repelling mosquitoes than many other insect repellents.<br \/>\nThe Health Ministry has recently said 4,3 million of Burundians have suffered from malaria in the period of six months of 2019.
