{"id":13371,"date":"2019-08-08T07:07:38","date_gmt":"2019-08-08T07:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=13371"},"modified":"2019-08-09T14:33:48","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T14:33:48","slug":"burundian-indigenous-people-face-several-challenges-says-uniproba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/burundian-indigenous-people-face-several-challenges-says-uniproba\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundian indigenous people face several challenges, says UNIPROBA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In a workshop held on August 7th, the Association for the Promotion of Batwa-UNIPROBA has said indigenous people in Burundi also known as Batwa are confronted with many problems including poverty and illiteracy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13370\" style=\"width: 338px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13370\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Nengo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"328\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Nengo.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Nengo-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Nengo-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Nengo-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Emmanuel Nengo: \u201cBatwa are poorly represented in decision-making bodies\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Emmanuel Nengo, Chairman of UNIPROBA says Batwa people in Burundi encounter problems such as food insecurity, high illiteracy rate, lack of title deeds for their plots of land and poor accommodation for the majority of them.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Nengo also says Batwa are poorly represented in decision-making bodies. \u201cTheir income generating activities are insufficiently funded,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Batwa people are known particularly for pottery but don\u2019t get enough clay to conduct their activities.<br \/>\nHe also calls on the whole community of Batwa to participate in the 2020 elections, vote and get elected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe participate actively in political parties but we can hardly be on the lists of candidates who represent those political parties in national elections,\u201d says P\u00e9lagie Ndaruzaniye, a participant from Batwa community.<br \/>\nBatwa people are discriminated even during the hiring of civil servants, she adds.<\/p>\n<p>As for R\u00e9v\u00e9rien Simbarakiye, Director General of the integration of victims in the Ministry of Human Rights, he says Burundi government contributes to the development of Batwa community in different sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Simbarakiye asks the Batwa community to be more involved in the process of development and join cooperatives.<br \/>\nHe says the government of Burundi will continue to promote and protect the rights of Batwa people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must not forget the many daily challenges faced by indigenous people, especially Batwa people in Burundi,\u201d says Agn\u00e8s Faure, Cooperation Attach\u00e9 at the France Embassy in Burundi.<\/p>\n<p>For her, indigenous people represent 5% of the world\u2019s population but constitute 15% of marginalized people in the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance has always pleaded for the rights of minority groups especially by supporting the declaration of the United Nations on the rights of indigenous people,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was organized in the context of preparing the International Day of World\u2019s Indigenous Peoples celebrated every year on August 9th. Raising an awareness of the needs of indigenous people is among the objectives of the day.<\/p>\n<p>According to the United Nations, there are an estimated 370 million indigenous people in the world, living across 90 countries.
