{"id":13327,"date":"2019-08-01T07:14:40","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T07:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=13327"},"modified":"2019-08-01T07:14:40","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T07:14:40","slug":"burundian-women-poorly-represented-in-entrepreneurship-says-women-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/burundian-women-poorly-represented-in-entrepreneurship-says-women-in-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Burundian women poorly represented in entrepreneurship, says Women in Action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In the context of the celebration of the African Woman\u2019s Day on July 31st, African Women in Action, a local NGO says Burundian women face several challenges that hinder their development. <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13321\" style=\"width: 546px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13321\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-13321\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nicole-uwimana.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nicole-uwimana.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nicole-uwimana-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nicole-uwimana-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Nicole-uwimana-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mia Nicole Uwimana: \u201cThere should be political measures aimed at supporting women financially\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAlthough women are endowed with an entrepreneurial spirit, some of them are not supported by their society and partners,\u201d says Mia Nicole Uwimana, Founder and CEO of African Women in Action adding that a Burundian woman needs to be understood by the society.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Uwimana says Burundian women confront several challenges related to cultural and financial stereotypes when they undertake entrepreneurial activities.<br \/>\n\u201cWomen are often considered as weak, emotional and are expected to fail in their activities,\u201d she says adding that emancipated women are often considered as wicked and dangerous for the society.<\/p>\n<p>She also says Burundian women are limited when it comes to the management of financial assets in households. \u201cWomen\u2019s place in entrepreneurship as a profession is still inappropriate,\u201d she adds.<br \/>\nMrs. Uwimana says that progress has been made though there is still a lot to be done. \u201cThere are women who have already started their own businesses and prospered,\u201d she says adding that women should celebrate their partial victories to achieve more.<\/p>\n<p>She suggests that women be supported in their business activities. \u201cThere should be political measures aimed at supporting women especially those who lack financial means to implement their projects,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHigh taxes imposed on companies and lack of finance constitute a challenge to new businesses,\u201d says Salom\u00e9 Nitegeka, Managing Director of a Company of Consultancy, Construction and General Supply.<br \/>\nShe says banks should lower interest rates on loans especially for new companies. \u201cThe government should allow new companies to work without paying taxes for five years,\u201d she also says.<br \/>\nMrs. Nitegeka calls on other women to start their own businesses so they can develop themselves, their families and the country.<\/p>\n<p>The founder of African Women in Action says the African Woman\u2019s Day was established to promote the African women, value their capacities, activities and achievements.<br \/>\n\u201cIt is an opportunity to reflect on the role of African women in promoting peace and development in their countries,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>July 31st was dedicated to the &#8220;African Woman&#8217;s Day&#8221;
