{"id":12578,"date":"2019-05-03T16:29:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T16:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/?p=12578"},"modified":"2019-05-03T16:29:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T16:29:23","slug":"government-satisfied-with-press-freedom-in-burundi-while-rsf-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/government-satisfied-with-press-freedom-in-burundi-while-rsf-worries\/","title":{"rendered":"Government satisfied with press freedom in Burundi while RSF worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Ministry of Communication and the Reporter Without Borders NGO appreciate differently the situation of freedom of the press in Burundi. <\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12577\" style=\"width: 539px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12577\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-12577\" src=\"http:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ministre-de-la-communication.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"529\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ministre-de-la-communication.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ministre-de-la-communication-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ministre-de-la-communication-768x442.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.iwacu-burundi.org\/englishnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/ministre-de-la-communication-600x345.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-12577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ministry of Communication and the RSF appreciate differently the situation of freedom of the press in Burundi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We reiterate the commitment of the ministry of communication to guarantee press freedom in accordance with the law in force&#8221; said Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Nahimana, Minister of Communication, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day celebrated on May 3rd.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This day is celebrated after the government&#8217;s remarkable efforts to promote press freedom,&#8221; he continues, citing some documents adopted in this order namely the code of ethics and deontology of journalism and press law.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Nahimana says the number of radio and television channels, news agencies and newspapers operating on Burundian territory prove that press freedom is effectively guaranteed.<br \/>\nThe international NGO Reporter Without Borders, however, complains that press freedom is restricted. &#8220;Burundian journalists continue to flee into exile for fear of reprisals,&#8221; says RSF.<\/p>\n<p>RSF does not hope the situation will improve soon arguing that the Burundian President imposes strict censorship of the media. &#8220;Through sessions the President organizes to improve the moral of the population, he draws up guidelines to journalists on information processing in Burundi.&#8221;<br \/>\nRSF also deplores the suspension of international radio broadcasts VOA and BBC on Burundian territory. &#8220;Their suspension is maintained for arbitrary reasons,&#8221; according to RSF.<\/p>\n<p>RSF ranked Burundi the 159th out of 180 countries assessed in terms of press freedom in the 2018 world rankings.
