Women called on to achieve competence instead of representation

“Women should not be satisfied with the fact that they are represented at their 30% in public institutions as provided for by the Constitution. They need to become more competent to apply for other decent jobs in various fields, “said Gloriose Nimenya, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Youth Education and Communication in the National Assembly.

MP Gloriose Nimenya:”We will encourage our girls to attend high schools”

It was during a workshop which organized by ActionAid on the mechanisms for implementing and ensuring decent jobs for women this Thursday, November 29.

Mrs Nimenya insists on women empowerment. “We will encourage our girls to attend high in order to become competent,” she says adding that they will achieve this by sensitizing women and girls to create trade associations.

This Member of Parliament deplores the fact that politicians are interested in women while looking for votes to win elections but ignore them when making blocked lists. “Once competent, women can be part of decision-making bodies, too,” she says.

Lidouine Nimbona, in charge of protecting widows, orphans and other vulnerable people within the group of women’s associations and NGOs in Burundi endorses this view. This human rights activist says she is outraged at the fact that women are often excluded during the recruitment process.

Mrs Nimbona calls on both public and private organizations to consider merit and competence while recruiting employees so men and women could have the same employment opportunities.
This workshop is part of the campaign of 16 days of activism against violence against women and girls which was launched on 26 November.
