Each family received 54 kg of maize seeds, 18 kg of beans, 3.75 kg of cottonseed oil, and 0.75 kg of salt which were distributed by the Burundi Red Cross. These families are gathered in Kiyange I district, Buterere area in Ntahangwa commune in a place commonly known as “Chez Manwangari”.

Sylvestre Gacece, in charge of emergency operations at the Red Cross, has said the assistance consists of a 30-day food ration. “After 30 days, we will give them another three-month-assistance.”

The beneficiaries say this help comes at the right time. “I’m so happy. A few days ago, my kids had only lunch and I gave them a cup of tea each in the evening,” says a woman in her thirties. According to her, this ration is enough. She hopes her husband will have rehabilitated their house before the food is over. “My husband is trying to rebuild our house.”

Another man who spoke to Iwacu expressed his gratitude: “They just saved our lives, all our crops have been damaged by the rain we had nothing left. This father of two asks other benefactors for help with building materials. “We need metal sheets to rehabilitate our houses.”

On 29 May, the Red Cross had given emergency shelter kits for flood victims who have own plots.
