KENYA – Al Jazeera in trouble under the new Kenyan anti-terror bill

The Kenyan Government has filed an official complaint to Al Jazeera after the news channel aired a documentary alleging widespread government-sponsored violence. The documentary showed men who claimed to be anti-terror officers, and who reported that they killed hundreds of suspects on government orders, without any due process. The government refuted all allegations, stating that the information presented in the documentary was ‘inaccurate, biased and inflammatory.’The complaint filed states that Al Jazeera must provide a response by December 24th.
The dispute with Al Jazeera came following country’s parliamentary approval of a controversial anti-terror bill giving the government increased powers to tap phones, retain terror suspects and punish journalists who ‘undermine investigations or security operations relating to terrorism.’
