Members of the government that was led by Melchior Ndadaye plead for a special honor for this democracy hero. They have said that in a public conference held this October 19, 2018 in remembrance of 25 years after his assassination.

Sylvestre Ntibantunganya: “Melchior Ndadaye deserves a special honor because he sacrificed his life for the country”.

Sylvestre Ntibantunganya, former member of the cabinet at that time, says Melchior Ndadaye deserves a special honor because he sacrificed his life for the country. “There should be a place named after him. Bujumbura International Airport, a road or any other achievement of paramount importance for instance can be named after him”.

Jacqueline Sindayirakira, widow of Pontien Karibwami, Speaker of the national assembly of the time, calls on the government to find a special way to honor those who were killed together with the president. “There is a need to officially remember people assassinated together with the president of the time. It is really sad that they have been forgotten. They deserve to be remembered”.

President Ntibantunganya says it is true that Ndadaye was not the only one who fought for democracy but all the people who were working together with him. “The wife of the former speaker of the national assembly is right. President Ndadaye didn’t work alone. The government should take into consideration her plea as it is shared by many people,” says former Burundi president.

On 21 October each year, Burundi commemorates the assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye three months after his election in 1993. He was the first democratically elected president of Burundi and is known as the democratic hero in Burundi.
