This Tuesday, 20 September 2016, the European Council renewed until 31 October 2017 restrictive measures against four people “whose activities were seen as undermining democracy or hampering the search for a political solution to the crisis that has rocked Burundi since the past few months. Their activities include acts of violence, repression and incitement to violence, as well as acts constituting serious violations of human rights.”

Those Burundians are Godefroid Bizimana, Deputy Director General of the National Police (PNB), Gervais Ndirakobuca nicknamed Ndakugarika, chief of staff for President in charge of issues related to the national police, Mathias Joseph Niyonzima also known as  Kazungu, agent of the National Intelligence Agency ( SNR) and Leonard  Ngendakumana, former ” missions manager at the presidential office ” currently in exile.

Those measures include banning them from entering the territory of the European Union and the freezing of their assets. “The European Council considered that the lack of progress in connection with the four people subject to the above mentioned restrictive measures justified the extension of sanctions.”
These measures were adopted on 1 October 2015.
