Food prices have significantly risen in recent days in Rugombo commune

One kg of beans which was bought at BIF 1400 currently costs BIF 2000. A kg of rice that cost BIF 1300 costs BIF 2000 while 1 kg of cassava flour that was bought at BIF 700 costs BIF 1,300 now. Sources say prices of other foodstuffs have also gone up.

Frédéric Nduwimana, a bean seller at Rugombo market explains that traders also source foodstuffs at a high price. “Customers have decreased because the prices have skyrocketed,” he says.

C.K, a resident of Rugombo regrets that this price increase will cause the depreciation of the local currency. “If the situation does not change, we will not be able to feed our families in the next few years as our salaries do not increase,” says C.K.

The economic adviser of the administrator of Rugombo commune indicates that the local authorities plan to organize a meeting with traders to fix together the prices of foodstuffs in order to avoid speculations.
