Bujumbura dismisses UN Secretary General report

In the report submitted to the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres seriously criticizes the upcoming amendment to the constitution. “Even though Burundi has the sovereign right to amend its Constitution, I firmly believe that such an important process must be conducted in an inclusive manner in order to obtain the widest possible participation and consensus among key actors involved in the political issues”, he says.

The UN Secretary General says the government continues to seek constitutional amendments that exacerbate tensions with the opposition. “An inclusive dialogue is the only way for Burundi to restore trust among stakeholders, strengthen national unity and democratic values,” he says. Burundi First Deputy President Gaston Sindimwo says Burundi government has consulted all people before planning to amend the constitution. “The UN Secretary General should stop interfering in the Burundi government affairs. The Constitution amendment concerns the sovereignty of the country”, he says. Albert Shingiro, Permanent Representative of Burundi to UN says the UN Secretary General report is biased and politically oriented.
